The central management office for the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program is seeking a highly motivated individual with strong communication skills to join our team.
Employer: Integrated Ocean Drilling Program Management International (IODP-MI) is an international nonprofit organization that manages a scientific research program that conducts Earth investigations by drilling, coring, and monitoring beneath the seafloor.
Position summary: Assist IODP Data and Information Manager in overseeing program-wide data management and scientific information activities, including the development of the IODP Web-based data portal, SEDIS (http://sedis.iodp.org/), to support multidisciplinary and distributed sources of data gathered by the program and its legacy predecessors, DSDP and ODP. Identification of user needs, specification and oversight of subcontracts, in-house development of software related to SEDIS, as required, and oversight of data and publication uploads.
Preferred Qualifications: Academic background and/or applied experience within (marine) geosciences or a related field; knowledge of an objected-oriented programming language (e.g., Java, C#), SQL, and a scripting language (e.g., Perl, PHP, Python); familiarity with XML-based metadata and metadata management; previous professional experience with geoscientific data and information management.
Workplace and compensation: This position is located on the campus of University of Hokkaido, Sapporo, Japan. Office relocation to Tokyo in 2010 is a possibility.
